Get Involved! Longest Day Longest Ride 2015
If you fancy celebrating Midsummer by doing something truly memorable, how about getting on your bike? Taking place 27th-28th June 2015, Longest Day Longest Ride is a mountain bike endurance event open to individuals, pairs and teams, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re an experienced rider or a novice; the only prerequisites are enthusiasm and determination!
Longest Day Longest Ride is sponsored by Conister Bank and takes place at Conrhenny Plantation. The aim is simply to complete as many laps of the 5 kilometre track as possible in 24 hours. With the course taking riders through a variety of terrain, from forest roads, to sweeping single tracks and boardwalks through the trees, no two laps are the same.
Longest Day Longest Ride was first held in 2010. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with over £25,000 raised for local charities. Race organiser Gary Cooper hopes for this year’s event to be bigger and better than ever. “It’s about endurance and balance rather than speed” says Gary. “It’s a challenge but the emphasis is on having fun, and it’s accessible to all levels and abilities. If you’re looking to improve your fitness, training for and taking part in Longest Day Longest Ride provides a great motivational goal.”
One participant, Clare, was completely won over after competing in 2014. She comments, "I consider myself to be a real novice. I started by joining the Misfits social rides, which gave me the confidence to sign up for the event. It was an amazing weekend, the atmosphere was friendly and everyone had fun."
The huge amount of time and effort t put in by the organisers, coupled with the infectious spirits of riders and spectators on the day, results in an event which is part sporting challenge, part festival in the forest. Entrants and their families are invited to camp out and make a weekend of it, and fancy dress is also encouraged!
The winner of last year’s solo category was Julian Corlett (76 laps, 228 miles), while Douglas Fire Services took top team honours on the day with 105 laps (315 miles). Whether you want to try for glory or simply try your best, entries for Longest Day Longest Ride are now. Be sure to get your entry in before 1st May to claim your special event jersey.
Gary comments, “For me, there are two highlights. The start, when all the riders set off, is a massive buzz. Then, when people finish – watching them celebrate with their friends and family and seeing their glow of achievement - everyone involved in Longest Day Longest Ride knows that all the hard work behind the scenes was so worthwhile.”
